2月19日，博納迎來(lái)2024新學(xué)期的開啟。在新學(xué)期的首場(chǎng)國(guó)旗下的演講上，高中部主任Michael老師給博納社區(qū)的老師和同學(xué)們帶來(lái)了《多元與包容》的主題演講，他說(shuō)“只有了解世界的真實(shí)面貌，而不是你希望或認(rèn)為應(yīng)該是的樣子，才能真正迎接21世紀(jì)的挑戰(zhàn)。”

　　新的學(xué)期，期望同學(xué)們能夠從身邊開始，接觸和了解世界的復(fù)雜和多樣，努力讓自己和世界變得更美好!

　　Michael老師在華盛頓州立大學(xué)獲得歷史碩士學(xué)位，他擁有11年的教學(xué)經(jīng)驗(yàn)，他是一位盡職盡責(zé)的管理者和教育工作者。他對(duì)以學(xué)生為中心的教育充滿著熱情，擁有馬薩諸塞州歷史老師教師資格，并擁有5-12年級(jí)的教學(xué)經(jīng)歷和經(jīng)驗(yàn)。工作之余，Michael老師喜歡和妻子以及兩只貓?jiān)谝黄穑�他也熱愛�?guó)內(nèi)外的旅行。

　　Good morning faculty and students of SAIE, I hope you had a wonderful holiday. Whether you stayed in Shenzhen, travelled to another city or town in China or traveled abroad hopefully you made memorable experiences. For those of you who travelled abroad I hope you took opportunities to get outside of your own bubble and engage with the people and the environment of the places that you visited.

　　博納的老師和同學(xué)們，早上好!希望大家度過(guò)了一個(gè)美好的假期。無(wú)論你是留在深圳，前往中國(guó)的其他城市或鄉(xiāng)鎮(zhèn)，還是出國(guó)旅行，希望你都留下了難忘的經(jīng)歷。對(duì)于那些出國(guó)旅行的同學(xué)們，我希望你們抓住機(jī)會(huì)走出自己的舒適圈，與所到之處的人們和環(huán)境交流與互動(dòng)。

　　There is an old lie about globalization that a rising tide lifts all boats. It’s been touted for two generations in terms of broader macroeconomic trends, and while it’s not true there, the basic notion of interdependence and strength in diversity is true in terms of human societies. Now you might be asking, why am I talking about Macroeconomics in our monthly flag-raising ceremony? At a fundamental level I am not, I’m talking about Diversity and Inclusion.

　　關(guān)于全球化有一個(gè)古老的謊言，即“水漲船高”。在宏觀經(jīng)濟(jì)趨勢(shì)的廣泛背景下，這一觀點(diǎn)已經(jīng)被兩代人所信奉，雖然這并不成立。但相互依存的概念以及多樣性的力量，在人類社會(huì)中是成立的�，F(xiàn)在你可能會(huì)問(wèn)，為什么我要在我們每月升旗儀式上談?wù)摵暧^經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)?從根本上說(shuō)，我并不是在談?wù)摵暧^經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)，我在談?wù)摰氖嵌嘣�性和包容性�?/p>

　　From a corporation to a school, organizations are improved by a diversity of opinions and perspectives. For most of human history education was the restricted to either a specific class of people or for those wealthy enough to afford education. A monopoly on ideas and innovations generally resulted as people could only imagine the world in a single way. Looking back to Chinese history, it was during the Spring and Autumn period that ideas flowed and philosophical innovations occurred. Moving further ahead the glory days of the Tang benefitted from the cosmopolitan nature of Chang’an and the Silk Road trade. This trend continues today, you are students at an international school in Shenzhen. Our very city is a product of open-minded thinking.

　　無(wú)論是公司還是學(xué)校，一個(gè)組織都會(huì)因意見和觀點(diǎn)的多樣性而得到改善。在人類歷史的大部分時(shí)間里，教育要么局限于特定階層，要么是富裕到足以負(fù)擔(dān)教育費(fèi)用的人們所享有的特權(quán)。由于人們只能以單一方式想象世界，觀念和創(chuàng)新通常會(huì)壟斷在某一群體之中�；仡欀袊�(guó)歷史，正是在春秋時(shí)期，思想流動(dòng)和哲學(xué)創(chuàng)新得以發(fā)生。更進(jìn)一步，唐代的輝煌也受益于長(zhǎng)安的國(guó)際化特性和絲綢之路貿(mào)易。這種趨勢(shì)如今仍在延續(xù)，你們是深圳一所國(guó)際學(xué)校的學(xué)生。我們的城市本身就是開放思維的產(chǎn)物。

　　There is a direct correlation between universal public education and improved economic and societal outlooks for societies. At each step when more people were given access to education and provided equal opportunity in the workforce you have seen both societal and economic growth. This is true if we are talking about when all classes of men were provided schooling or women achieving equality of access to education. The benefit from a diversity of viewpoints isn’t necessarily that your own mindset will change; it’s that you can empathize with others and understand their viewpoint. Understanding how others’ lives and experiences shaped them can provide you useful context and perspective. Great inventions and ideas do not come from group-think or closed systems; they come a willingness to engage with the world, and to understand how things work.

　　普及公共教育與社會(huì)和經(jīng)濟(jì)前景的改善之間存在直接關(guān)聯(lián)。每當(dāng)更多人獲得教育機(jī)會(huì)并在職場(chǎng)中獲得平等機(jī)會(huì)時(shí)，我們都會(huì)看到社會(huì)和經(jīng)濟(jì)的增長(zhǎng)。無(wú)論是所有階層的男性獲得學(xué)校教育，還是女性實(shí)現(xiàn)教育機(jī)會(huì)均等，這都是正確的。從多元觀點(diǎn)中獲益的好處并不一定在于改變自己的思維方式，而在于你能夠產(chǎn)生同理心，并理解他們的觀點(diǎn)。了解他人的生活和經(jīng)歷如何塑造了他們，可以為你提供有用的背景和視角。偉大的發(fā)明和想法并非來(lái)自集體思維或封閉系統(tǒng)，而是源自于愿意與世界接觸，并理解事物運(yùn)作的原理。

　　In your life you will meet a variety of people who have differing opinions from yourself and your friends. Don’t waste time trying to change their views, you will only frustrate yourself and them. Understand why they feel the way they do and perhaps this will provide insight to your own views. Only by understanding the world for how it is and not how you hope/wish/feel it should be can you actually meet the challenges of the 21st century.

　　在你的生活中，你會(huì)遇到許多持有與你和你的朋友不同觀點(diǎn)的人。不要浪費(fèi)時(shí)間試圖改變他們的觀點(diǎn)，這只會(huì)讓你和他們感到沮喪。了解他們?yōu)楹纬钟羞@種觀點(diǎn)，也許這會(huì)啟示你自己的看法。只有了解世界的真實(shí)面貌，而不是你希望或認(rèn)為應(yīng)該是的樣子，才能真正迎接21世紀(jì)的挑戰(zhàn)。

　　This is not to say don’t try to change the world or make it a better place, but if you cannot understand the complexity of the world as it exists, all of those goals are not able to get off the ground floor. Step one in making the world a better place is an appreciation for the myriad perspectives and experiences that our fellow human beings have. You do not become weaker for accepting others as they are, you grow in strength because instead of trying to destroy or change what is different you forge connections and embrace that there is no one universal way of living.

　　這并不是說(shuō)不要努力改變世界或讓其變得更美好，但如果你不能理解現(xiàn)實(shí)世界的復(fù)雜性，那么所有這些目標(biāo)都無(wú)法起步。讓世界變得更美好的第一步是欣賞我們的同胞擁有多樣的觀點(diǎn)和經(jīng)歷。接受他人并不會(huì)讓你變得脆落，相反，你會(huì)因?yàn)椴辉僭噲D摧毀或改變與自己不同的事物，而選擇與其建立聯(lián)系，并接受世界上不存在一致的生活方式這個(gè)現(xiàn)實(shí)，而變得更強(qiáng)大。
